Sweet Beginnings

Posted by christina on 09/30/2011

It’s been a whirlwind of change and growth for us here at MIHO in the last couple months with the launch of our second truck and the move to our own kitchen space. Now that we’ve settled into our kitchen, it’s time to spread our wings and take on a new endeavor that we are proud to present to you on this week’s menu…MIHO SWEETS!

Pastry has always been a passion and hobby of mine, and to be able to bring my sweets to the street is a dream come true! On this week’s menu, you’ll find two all-American favorites that I hope prove to be HOMI pleasers. I’ve been a cookie aficionado since I was a kid, and I’m sure you share the same sentiment, so I can’t wait for you to try our Chocolate Chip Cookie. Also, be sure to try the mini Apple Galette, a rustic take on apple pie made with Crow’s Pass Farm apples in a flaky, buttery crust.

When it comes to sweets, I believe Ernestine Ulmer, an early 20th century writer, put it best when she said, “Life is uncertain, eat dessert first.” Come out and treat yourself this week and as always, we look forward to seeing you on the street.

Farm to Crooked Street

Posted by christina on 09/27/2011

There’s a not too far away place called San Francisco that I am proud to call home, and I was fortunate enough to get away for a couple days last week to pay a visit. If there’s one thing I can say about my fellow descendants of the Bay Area, it’s that they sure know how to eat well, and why wouldn’t they? San Francisco’s prime location allows access to produce from the finest farms in the valleys, the best milk and cheese from dairies across the Golden Gate, and fresh seafood from just within the Bay limits. It’s no wonder that the best artisans and food crafters gather here from near and far to celebrate what the seasons bring.

A food enthusiast’s trip to the Bay needs to include a couple things in my opinion: a great cup of coffee and a trip to the Ferry Plaza Farmer’s Market. I chose to caffeinate my day at Sightglass Coffee, an artisan roastery just south of the Downtown area. Just as we take pride in the sourcing of all of our ingredients at MIHO, the brotherly duo at Sightglass does just the same when it comes to their craft. Every step along the path of coffee roasting and brewing is done with the utmost care and detail, creating an end product that is unforgettable.

Whether your preference is sweets, savory or all of the above, the Ferry Plaza Farmer’s Market is the place to be when it comes to good food. From local artisan cheeses and charcuterie to produce that has just been harvested that morning, the marketplace is a go-to for cooks of all calibers, including some of SF’s finest.

It was good to be home again and to be reminded that good food comes from the hands of passionate artists, who are hungry to perfect their craft. The City by the Bay is a wonderful destination, and I hope that all you HOMI’s out there get a chance to take a trip like I did.

Doctor’s Orders

This past summer, we put forth an amazing locally grown, produce driven menu filled with such HOMI favorites as the Grilled Peach Burger and the BLAT. As we bid farewell to stone fruit, melons, and tomatoes, we’d like to welcome a fresh, Fall harvest to the kitchen. Apples have just arrived from Wingshadows Hacienda that have a great, juicy bite that truly makes our Apple Salad a must try for the week.

Apples have had their place in traditional folk tales and even in tales of biblical proportions for thousands of years, so it’s no wonder that they are one of the most popular fruits in the United States. One of the oldest and most well known proverbs states that an “apple a day keeps the doctor away,” and indeed, an apple’s antioxidant and fiber content have proven to be beneficial to one’s health. Come and visit us for lunch this week and we can guarantee that a MIHO meal is sure to do a body good. See you soon!

Get In Ma’ Belly!

If you haven’t heard yet, popular demand has brought back one of our most beloved menu items, the Pork Belly Banh Mi, back to the street this week! We’ve added MIHO flair to the definitive Vietnamese street food, and we can’t wait to share it with you. We start with slow braised Duroc pork belly that is merrily matched with a lemongrass sesame aioli, house pickled daikon and carrots, Suzie’s Farm cilantro and jalapenos. Piled high onto a crisp, Bread & Cie French baguette, it can’t be beat!

The banh mi has become typical fare across the country but originally traces it’s roots back to Vietnam, where it literally translates to ‘wheat biscuit.’ French colonists first introduced this wheat biscuit, or baguette, to the Indo China region of Asia. Indigenous ingredients such as coriander leaves, hot chile peppers and pickled vegetables were then added along with grilled meats and cold cuts to create the banh mi that we know and love to this day.

It is without a doubt that you’ll definitely want this belly in your belly, so take it to the street this week and join us for a Pork Belly Banh Mi. We’ll see you soon!
